You have almost certainly met the claim. Place a few plants around your home and the air gets cleaner. Six plants per bedroom. Four per person. The numbers are repeated so often they sound settled.

They are not. The research behind that claim has been misread for more than thirty years, and the honest version turns out to be more useful than the popular one.

Air-purifying plants are indoor plants shown in laboratory conditions to absorb certain airborne compounds. In a real, ventilated room the effect on air quality is very small. Plants earn their place in an Indian home for humidity, greenery and comfort not as a substitute for ventilation or filtration.

Do Air-Purifying Plants Actually Work?

Short answer: not in the way the claim suggests. Plants absorb airborne compounds in sealed laboratory chambers. In a ventilated room, ordinary air exchange does the same job many times faster.

What the NASA study really tested

The claim traces back to a 1989 NASA study led by B.C. Wolverton, which investigated air cleaning for sealed space stations. A plant was placed in a small closed chamber, a single compound was injected, and its decline was tracked over hours or days.

The findings were real. The setting was not a living room. A sealed box of roughly one cubic metre has almost nothing in common with a home that exchanges air with the outdoors.

What later research found

In 2019, Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring of Drexel University reviewed twelve chamber studies covering 196 experimental results and converted them into clean air delivery rates the metric used to rate real air cleaners. The median single-plant rate came to 0.023 m³/h. Matching what ordinary outdoor-to-indoor air exchange already achieves would need somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space.

That is not a home. That is a greenhouse with furniture in it.

What plants genuinely do

Transpiration releases moisture, which is welcome through a dry north Indian winter. Foliage collects a little settled dust. Greenery measurably changes how people rate a space, and a room people enjoy tends to be a room they open, clean and ventilate.

These benefits are real. They are simply not filtration.

What Is Actually in Indian Indoor Air?

PM2.5 and PM10 travel in through windows, doors and gaps, which is why indoor readings in Delhi, Kanpur or Mumbai often track outdoor readings closely through winter.

This is a particulate problem, and foliage does not remove airborne particulate at any meaningful rate.

Cooking and combustion

For most Indian households the largest indoor source sits in the kitchen: gas flames, frying, and smoke from incense, mosquito coils and candles.

Plants do nothing measurable about combustion by-products. An extraction hood and an open window do a great deal.

VOCs from furnishings and finishes

Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds off-gas from new plywood, laminates, paints, adhesives and upholstery. This is the one category where the chamber research has any relevance at all and even here, ventilation outperforms greenery comfortably.

Which Plants Are Genuinely Worth Growing

The useful question is not which plant topped a chamber study. It is which plants thrive in an Indian flat inconsistent light, irregular watering, and long gaps when nobody is home.

Hardy performers for low and indirect light

Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) tolerates neglect better than almost anything else and holds a strong vertical form. Money plant (Epipremnum aureum) grows in poor light and even in plain water, which is why it survives in Indian homes where other species fail. Both are inexpensive and available everywhere.

Larger foliage for humidity and presence

Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) and rubber plant (Ficus elastica) bring real visual mass and higher transpiration, which is where the humidity benefit actually comes from. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) flowers in moderate light and droops visibly when thirsty, making it forgiving for beginners. All three want better light and more attention than the first group. Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) grows readily on a sunlit balcony and carries cultural familiarity in most households. Aloe vera handles heat and thrives on being forgotten. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) propagates freely, so one plant becomes several at no cost.

Placement, Light and Realistic Numbers

Match the plant to the light the space actually has

Assess the light honestly. A low-light plant still needs light, and windowless bathrooms, internal corridors and deep north-facing corners are where most indoor plants quietly die.

Move a plant toward the light before concluding it is a bad plant.

Leaf area, pot volume and root space

One well-grown plant with substantial leaf area does more for humidity and presence than six small pots crowded onto a shelf. Root volume sets the ceiling on growth, so a cramped pot limits a healthy species just as effectively as poor light does.

How many plants are realistic

If the goal is measurably cleaner air, the honest number is impractical in any home. If the goal is a space that feels green, calm and cared for, three to five well-placed plants will transform a room.

Choose the second goal. It is the one that is achievable.

Safety, Maintenance and What Goes Wrong

Toxicity around children and pets

Several popular species contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, including peace lily, money plant and philodendron. Chewing the leaves can irritate the mouth and throat. Aloe vera is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.

None of this makes them unsuitable. It makes placement a decision above reach, on shelves, away from a crawling child's path. Areca palm and spider plant are the safer picks in households where this matters.

Overwatering, mould and pests

Constantly wet potting media grows mould and breeds fungus gnats, which means poorly maintained plants can worsen an indoor environment rather than improve it. Drainage holes, a free-draining medium and restraint with the watering can prevent nearly all of it.

Monsoon and humidity management

Through the monsoon, media dry slowly and fungal problems rise. Adjust watering by season rather than following a fixed schedule, and keep air moving around dense foliage.

What Actually Improves Indoor Air Quality

Ventilation first

Air exchange is the most effective intervention available in a home. Open windows on more than one side when outdoor air is reasonable, run the exhaust while cooking, and keep ventilators clear.

Source control second

Choose low-VOC paints and adhesives, air new furniture before installing it, use an extraction hood over the hob, and cut down on indoor incense and coil burning.

Filtration where outdoor air is poor

In cities with high seasonal PM2.5, mechanical HEPA filtration does the work plants cannot. Plants and purifiers are not alternatives to each other. They solve entirely different problems.

Indoor plants deserve a place in an Indian home. Just not as a filter.

Ventilation, source control and filtration handle air quality. Plants handle everything else light softened, texture added, humidity lifted a little, and a room that feels considered rather than sealed. That is reason enough on its own.
