Search for a biophilic home in India and you will mostly find a plant shopping list photographed against a linen sofa. Buy fifteen pots, place them near a window, and the room is declared biophilic.

It rarely works. A home can be full of plants and still feel sealed, dim and cut off from everything outside.

Biophilic design principles are the design rules that connect a building to nature through daylight, airflow, natural materials, organic form, water, and the way space is arranged. Plants are one expression of these principles, not the whole framework.

Indian homes understood this long before the vocabulary arrived. The courtyard, the jaali screen and the deep verandah were all doing this work. This guide covers the principles themselves, where they came from, and how each one applies to a flat, a villa or a terrace and how they scale up into biophilic and wellness garden design at site level.

What Are Biophilic Design Principles?

From instinct to framework

Biophilia is the human tendency to seek connection with living systems. The biologist E.O. Wilson popularised the idea in his 1984 book Biophilia. The researcher Stephen Kellert then translated it into design attributes that architects could actually build with, and Terrapin Bright Green's 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design turned that into the working checklist most practitioners reference today.

A framework makes the instinct testable. You can walk into a room and ask which connections are present and which are missing.

The three categories the principles fall into

Kellert grouped the experience of nature in a building into three categories, and they work well as a spine for any home:

  • Direct nature — daylight, fresh air, water, plants, weather and seasonal change
  • Indirect nature — natural materials, organic form, texture, colour and patina
  • Space and place — how space is arranged, sheltered, opened up, and tied to its locality

Why "more than just plants"

A room with twelve pots and no daylight is not biophilic. A room with one generous window, air moving through it, a stone floor underfoot and a view of a tree usually is.

Plants are the easiest principle to buy and the hardest to keep alive in the wrong conditions. They belong at the end of the process, not the start.

Indian Homes Were Biophilic Long Before the Term Existed

The courtyard as a climate and connection device

The aangan, the chowk and Kerala's nadumuttam were never decorative. A courtyard pulled daylight into the middle of a deep plan. It drove hot air upward and drew cooler air in behind it. It held a tulsi planting or a small water body. And it gave the household an outdoor room that stayed private.

Direct nature, indirect nature and spatial arrangement, solved in one move.

Jaali, verandah, chhajja and jharokha

The jaali filtered light rather than blocking it, and cooled the air passing through it. The verandah and the otla created a shaded in-between zone instead of a hard line between inside and outside. The chhajja kept sun off the wall while leaving the view intact. The jharokha framed that view from a sheltered position.

Each of these maps cleanly onto a modern biophilic pattern. The names are just newer than the buildings.

What was lost, and what is recoverable

Much of urban India now lives in sealed, single-aspect flats with fixed glazing and year-round air conditioning. Daylight arrives from one direction. Air does not move unless a machine moves it.

This is a design problem, not a reason for nostalgia, and most of it can be partly recovered. The sections below cover how.

Direct Nature: Light, Air and Water

Daylight without heat gain

India's complication is that daylight is abundant and so are heat and glare. The goal is filtered light, not raw light.

Orientation decides most of it. North light is steady and cool. South and west light needs depth of shading a chhajja, a pergola, a planted screen, a deep balcony. Light also moves through the day and across seasons, so a corner that works in December can be unusable in May.

Airflow and cross-ventilation

Air needs openings on more than one wall to actually move. Where a flat has only one aspect, internal doors, ventilators and stairwell openings become the path instead.

This is why sealed apartments feel closed even when they are full of greenery. The eye registers nature; the body registers still, unchanging air.

Water as sight and sound

A small water element at courtyard or balcony scale adds movement and masks traffic noise, often the more valuable of the two in a city.

It also needs honesty about upkeep: moving water, regular cleaning, no standing water. Otherwise a wellness feature becomes a mosquito problem within a month.

Indirect Nature: Materials, Form and Texture

Natural materials over natural-look materials

Kota stone, terracotta, lime plaster, teak, cane and jute behave differently from printed laminate that imitates them. They hold temperature differently, they carry real grain, and they respond to touch.

This is the principle that does the most work in homes where planting is limited. Material is available everywhere in a space; light and greenery are not.

Biomorphic form and pattern

Curves, organic edges, jaali geometry and motifs drawn from leaf and vine carry nature into places a plant cannot go a corridor, a bathroom, a north wall with no light.

The pattern does not need to be literal. Irregularity and natural proportion register even when the reference is abstract.

Age, patina and change

Lime plaster settles. Brass darkens. Teak deepens in colour. Stone wears where people walk.

A palette chosen to age well reads as living rather than freshly installed, and this is where a considered home separates itself from a showroom finish.

Space and Place: Prospect, Refuge and Transition

Prospect and refuge

People are drawn to positions that offer an open outward view from a sheltered, backed position. It is the reason a window seat works, and the reason nobody chooses the table in the middle of an empty room.

In a compact flat, this can be as simple as a low seat set into a balcony corner with a solid wall behind it and a long view in front.

Transitional spaces

The verandah, the otla and the balcony are neither room nor garden. That in-between quality is a principle in itself, and it is the piece most modern floor plans drop entirely.

Connection to place

Regional plant palettes, local stone, seasonal cues and orientation are what keep a home rooted in where it actually is, rather than in a design magazine.

Where Plants Fit in the Framework

Plants as one principle, executed well

Placement should follow the light a space genuinely receives, not the corner that looks empty. Layering by height and leaf texture creates depth. Container and root volume decide whether a plant grows or merely survives.

Then there is the honest question: who waters this, and how often are they travelling?

The air-quality question

Indoor greenery makes a room feel greener, calmer and more cared for. Claims about measurable air purification in a real, ventilated room are a more complicated matter, and depend on the plant, the volume of the space and the air exchange rate.

Green walls and vertical planting

A vertical garden earns its place where floor area is genuinely unavailable and a wall can carry the load, the waterproofing and the irrigation. Installed without those three, it becomes a maintenance liability that looks poor within a season.

Work with what is fixed. Maximise the daylight you have, open a ventilation path across the plan, use material and form on the walls that planting cannot reach, and treat the balcony as the transitional room rather than storage.
